Toowoomba Central Active Transport Link, business case

Planning is underway for another key link in Toowoomba's Principal Cycle Network.

The Toowoomba Central Active Transport Link involves planning safe and convenient active transport facilities to encourage more people to walk and ride bikes more often.

The long-term vision is to provide a new link for walkers and riders through the northern suburbs of Toowoomba and connect what will be the Highfields Bikeway and Toowoomba Regional Council's East Creek Cycleway.

In consultation with active transport stakeholders, Toowoomba Regional Council and Queensland Rail, a preferred option was identified in June 2021 that established a proposed route as an alternative to facilities on the New England Highway.

The Toowoomba Central Active Transport Link starts at the John French VC Bridge, on the New England Highway at Harlaxton. The proposed route follows low-speed and low-volume local streets, the railway corridor and Gowrie Creek through Harlaxton and North Toowoomba, via the future Railway Parklands to The Goods Shed at Victoria Street. From The Goods Shed the proposed route follows Chalk Drive to connect with the East Creek Cycleway at Queens Park, Margaret Street.

Planning is underway to develop a concept design and investigate the types of facilities needed to provide a safe, direct and connected active transport link on the proposed route in line with the Queensland Cycling Strategy (2017-2027) and the Queensland Walking Strategy (2019-2029)
