Main Roads is committed to road safety around schools.
The safety of children and school buses, and provision for safe crossings and drop-off zones are taken into account when roads are designed and upgraded.
Some examples of projects incorporating school safety features:
- Smith Street major upgrade and 24-hour T3 transit lanes.
Constructing bus stops at the existing set down area in front of Southport State High School. Main Roads liaised closely with Southport State High School and the Musgrave Hill State School. Main Roads improved safety at Kumbari Avenue. We redirected all pedestrians to the opposite side of the avenue, to cross Smith Street.
- Beerburrum Road upgrade (Pumicestone Road to Haskins Street).
The upgrade includes constructing signals at Henzell Road and a parent drop- off zone opposite St Peter Catholic School. Existing signalised pedestrian crossing to the school will be modified.
- Mt Lindesay Highway upgrade (Green Road to Granger Road).
Revising access, parking, bus stop and set-down facilities at Park Ridge State School to improve safety and traffic flow.
- Toowong roundabout cyclist and pedestrian crossing.
This crossing will improve safety for Toowong State School children.
Queensland has varying speed limits in school zones, usually between the hours of 7:30am and 9:30am, and 2pm and 4pm. The speed limits are:
- 40 km/h in areas where the speed limit is 50/60 km/h
- 40 km/h in areas where the speed limit is 70 km/h
- 60 km/h in areas where the speed limit is 80 km/h
- 60 km/h or 80 km/h in areas where the speed limit is 90/100 km/h, depending on the amount of pedestrian activity
- 80 km/h in areas where the speed limit is 110 km/h.
Further information is available from Queensland Transport, responsible for school road safety.
