RSS feeds
What is an RSS feed?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a simple and quick way to see new content on the Main Roads website. We offer RSS feeds for:
- Webcams
- Properties for Sale
- Apartments for Rent in Brisbane
- Houses for Rent in Brisbane
- Events.
How do I start using feeds?
You will need an RSS reader, which is software that checks the feeds that you subscribe to and lets you read any new articles as they are added. There are many different versions of RSS readers, some of which are accessed using a standard web browser, and some of which are downloadable applications.
- Browser based RSS readers are very convenient, not requiring you to install any additional software. As you visit a website, the browser checks for RSS feeds and displays an icon when they are available.
- Web application RSS readers require you to login to a separate website using a web browser, with the advantage that you can access your subscriptions from any computer with Internet access, similar to accessing your email through Hotmail or Yahoo.
- Downloadable RSS readers let you store the content from RSS feeds on your computer, in the same way that you might download your e-mail using Outlook or Lotus Notes.
Once you have selected and configured a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. For example, if you would like the latest Main Roads Alerts, simply visit the RSS Feeds Directory on this website and click on 'Alerts'.
If you click on a RSS link or icon you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your RSS reader. Most sites that offer feeds use a similar orange button, but some may just have a normal web link.
How do I get a news reader?
There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.
