The Western Corridor program of works

Once completed, the Western Corridor transport projects will:

  • improve connectivity and access for all transport users
  • improve community and road safety
  • support Queensland's economic development
  • support and improve quality of life and environmental sustainability
  • meet the future requirements of people living in a growing state.

The Queensland Government is responding to the region's traffic needs with a coordinated plan to improve Western Corridor transport. To meet the demand for road and rail infrastructure in the Western Corridor, there is a range of transport projects in the pipeline. Some projects are under construction, others will begin construction soon and some are at the planning stage:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is working across all projects in the Western Corridor to manage traffic, minimise disruption and reduce inconvenience to motorists and communities.

The transport projects in the Western Corridor pipeline are addressing current and future transport challenges. These projects will provide a road system that will service the Western Corridor well into the future.

Thank you to our Western Corridor community and road users who continue to show support and patience throughout ongoing construction.

Traffic info

Traffic information

Upgrading major motorways and highways and keeping traffic flowing during construction is no easy task. Never before have so many transport projects been under construction so close to one another while such high traffic volumes are being maintained.

We use a range of methods to minimise traffic impacts and encourage safe and efficient traffic flow throughout construction, including:

  • maintaining existing traffic lanes on major roads in peak times
  • undertaking changes that impact traffic at night or outside peak times
  • taking into account public holidays and events
  • using barrier screens around construction sites to reduce driver distraction
  • monitoring traffic using closed circuit television (CCTV)
  • ensuring quick response teams are on hand to provide immediate assistance if a traffic incident occurs.

We’re doing our best to minimise disruption and inconvenience to motorists by carefully staging traffic changes, however due to the size and complexity of the projects in the Western Corridor, motorists may experience some traffic impacts during maintenance and construction activities. We will continue to keep motorists and the community informed about traffic changes.

Traffic changes

Information about traffic changes in the Western Corridor can be found in the Western Corridor road projects traffic update (November 2009) (PDF, 321 KB).

Coordinated newsletters

Western Corridor transport newsletters are distributed six monthly to around 160,000 businesses and households in the Western Corridor:

'Mobi' the mobile community engagement van

We make information easy to access by visiting shopping centres and attending events and festivals with our mobile community engagement van, who is fondly referred to as ‘Mobi’. Mobi has been out and about in the corridor since April 2008. If you would like Mobi to attend an event in your area, please call the Western Corridor hotline on 1800 013 189.

Free SMS updates

With so many projects underway, it is more important than ever to plan your journey before you leave. Main Roads now offers free SMS updates about planned traffic changes for Western Corridor projects.

Subscribe to the Western Corridor SMS update service, select the projects of interest and enter your details. To unsubscribe, visit the same website and click ‘Unsubscribe’.

Subscribers will receive free messages straight to their mobile phones about the projects of their choice in advance of scheduled traffic changes throughout the Western Corridor.

This SMS service is one of many communication tools in place in the corridor to increase awareness and minimise traffic impacts and disruption.

Main Roads encourages safe driving, so SMS messages will not be sent during peak hour, or before 9 am or after 8 pm.
