Work in full swing on the Bruce Highway Upgrade (Cooroy to Curra)

This vital upgrade will meet the safety and traffic needs of the region now and into the future, and be designed as a superior four-lane divided highway, which will be out of the Mary River floodplain and above a one-in-100 year flood level.

“The Rudd Labor Government is determined to improve safety on the Bruce Highway, which has crash rates 40 per cent higher than other major roads on the National Network,” Mr Albanese said.

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the upgrade demonstrates the state and federal governments’ commitment to working together to improve road safety and meet the transport needs of Queensland.

Preliminary works including fencing, construction of small dams, relocation of services and intersection improvements were completed in August. The relocation of services is ongoing with completion expected in early November 2009, weather permitting.

The first construction package, the bulk earthworks, is in full swing after Abigroup began major work on 8 October 2009.

The second construction package for Section B includes the construction of approximately 2km of a southern deviation of the Bruce Highway, with work anticipated to begin in early 2010.

The upgrade of Section B of the Cooroy to Curra stretch of the Bruce Highway is scheduled for completion in 2012.
