Main Roads' mission is to plan, provide and manage Queensland’s major road network. The result is a safe, effective and efficient network of roads, highways and motorways, servicing the entire state.

Main Roads, in conjunction with Queensland Transport, ensures the safety of road users now and in the future.

Main Roads is responsible for constructing and maintaining state-controlled roads and Queensland Transport offers advice, rules and standards for safe use of the roads.

Plan your trip

Whether it's a short drive or a long, road trip, planning is most important.

Tips for staying safe:

  • Make sure your car is in good, mechanical condition. It is illegal to drive a car that is not roadworthy. It is also highly dangerous. Your insurance may be affected if poor mechanical condition of your vehicle causes an accident.
  • Plan your journey — where you want to go, the route you will take and if there are roadworks or closures along those roads.
  • Check the traffic reports; phone 13 19 40, for accidents and delays.
  • Check the weather reports for rain, flooding, winds or visibility problems.
  • Avoid peak hour travel, where possible.

Driving outside city and town limits, consider all of the above tips, plus:

  • Reduce speed before nearing edge of the road. Beware of edge drop-offs and loose stones.
  • Look out for stray stock and wildlife, especially at night. Avoid swerving to miss them. Slow down and beep your horn.
  • If you're driving towards the west, avoid driving after 4 pm. The setting sun can affect your vision.

Check Traffic and travel information website and before you start your trip.
