Planners and designers instructions

A system of instructions for planners and designers has been introduced to assist those working in the planning and design phases of road projects to consistently achieve good quality designs. These will be referenced as Planners and designers instructions (PDI).

The strategy is to support capability, learning and development programs already in progress.

These instructions will not replace current manuals and processes, but will provide guidance on processes to be followed. A manual may provide a standard whereas these instructions will provide additional guidance on methodology to be followed or to correct common errors. Generally instructions will not be issued as a substitute for an amendment to a manual.

Implementation

Instructions will be issued when a need has been identified and an instruction is the appropriate method of conveying information to planners and designers.

The instructions will be categorised under the following headings to facilitate future reference:

  • General
  • Alignment Geometrics
  • Design Detailing
  • Roadside Furniture
  • Pavements
  • Drainage
  • Environmental Treatments, Erosion and Sediment Control
  • Right of Way (including Resumption, Native Title and Cultural Heritage)
  • Plan Presentation
  • CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting)
  • Estimating
  • Project Contract Documentation

Note: A heading for 'Traffic' has not been included as relevant instructions with respect to Traffic and Road Use Management (TRUM) topics will be issued via the manual.
