Q150 bridge naming project: South West Region

The Honourable Craig Wallace MP, Minister for Main Roads, recently announced new bridge names to celebrate Queensland's 150th birthday. The department would like to thank local communities for making the bridge naming such a success. The names chosen reflect the communities' input, local history or an important local identity.

Angellala Creek, Annie Switzer Bridge (Warrego Highway)

The name commemorates the wife of a railway fettler that tragically drowned near Angellala creek, and is buried nearby. Her death, like so many other maternal deaths in those days, must have been a great tragedy for her family.  People like Annie had tremendous courage and endurance and helped opened up the west.

Ward River, Meecha bridge (Diamantina Developmental Road)

The new approaches for the Ward River bridge pass through the main street of the surveyed township of Meecha.

The name commemorates a town that never was but one that epitomised the unrealised dreams of so many of our pioneers.
