Project info
The Joint Levee Road will link Sams Road with the Kooyong Intersection. When completed it will improve safety, provide a flood mitigation levee bank and dedicated heavy vehicle route to the Mackay Port bypassing Malcomson Street and Evans Avenue.
The construction of the levee as part of these works will also increase flood immunity to North Mackay which is often flooded during heavy rain.
Construction
Construction commenced on the Joint Levee Road in October 2007 and is being undertaken in three stages. Stage 1 involved building up 50% of the road embankment to a height of 2.5 metres and was completed in July 2008. The second stage, which was completed in September 2009, involved the construction of the remaining road embankment to a total height of 5 metres. Stage 3 is the construction of the road surface and pavement. The total project is expected to be completed by August 2010.

Community info
Main Roads began consultation with the community for the upgrading of Malcomson Street in June 2004. This consultation saw the community asking for the department to consider alternative options to upgrading Malcomson Street.
Responding to the consultation outcomes, the Minister asked the Mackay Area Integrated Transport Study (MAITS) Steering Committee to reform and review options for the upgrade. In 2005, the MAITS committee recommended that two options be investigated: (1) an upgrade of Malcomson Street and (2) Joint Levee Road.
This round of consultation found that the Joint Levee Road was the public's preferred option. Since then, the department has consulted with affected stakeholders and cultural groups as part of the construction process.
