Gilbert River Bridge Burke Developmental Road

Overview:

Replace the existing 60 m low-level bridge with a new high-level bridge, 180 m in length.

Location:

Gilbert River, 103 km north of Normanton on the Burke Developmental Road.

Benefits:

To improve safety and access to Cape York communities, to the Gulf centres of Karumba and Normanton and further south to Cloncurry and Mount Isa.

Funding:

$10 million.

Key milestones

  • Work commenced in September 2007.
  • Majority of construction on the new bridge complete before the commencement of wet season December 2007.
  • Work recommenced in May 2008, following the wet season.
