Project info

The Burdekin River Bridge is located on the Bruce Highway between the townships of Home Hill and Ayr.

Maintenance works are required to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge and to prepare the bridge for a total repaint.

The existing bridge was completed in 1957 and this is the first major structural rehabilitation work undertaken since its construction.

The Burdekin River Bridge is an important link in the national network and the only road and rail link between North and South Queensland. The alternate route to Townsville via Mount Coolon-Belyando-Charters Towers is 355 km longer with nearly 90 km of unsealed road.

The Burdekin River Bridge provides a strategic, high flood immunity link between north and south Queensland. It provides for both road and rail traffic and comprises ten (10) main spans (each 250 feet) and twenty-two approach spans with a total length of approximately 3620 feet (1103 metres).

The objective of the current maintenance project is to preserve the integrity of the bridge and extend its working life a further 100 years.
