Highway extension community open day a success
The opening of the $366 million Centenary Highway Extension marks a major milestone of transforming Brisbane's western corridor.
To celebrate this significant achievement and to thank the community for their patience during construction, a community event was held on 29 June 2009, one day before it opened to traffic.
Focusing on the importance of corridor preservation for the future, the event had overarching themes of education and environmental conservation.
The event had plenty of fun activities for kids big and small. There were stilt walkers, face-painters, and rock climbing walls with special appearances by ‘Feisty’ the fire ant and ‘Blazer’ the fire-fighting koala.
A highlight of the ceremony was the Queensland’s Q150 celebrations awards presented to community members whose suggested names were chosen for the five new bridge names in the project area.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh presented each contest winner with a Q150 Centenary Highway Extension gift.
As the ceremony came to a close, Premier Bligh and Transport Minister Rachel Nolan officially opened the highway by cutting the ribbon amidst the bustling community open day.
