A wider, smoother highway for north-west Queensland
Stage two of the Jardine Valley project is well on track for completion in December. The Flinders Highway upgrade between Hughenden and Prairie will be a major benefit to north-west Queenslanders, giving them a wider, smoother highway.
Background
The Flinders Highway is a major traffic route in north and north-west Queensland. The highway carries significant volumes of heavy transport and passenger vehicles between Townsville and Cloncurry. It is the major freight route connecting the sea ports of Darwin and Townsville.
Over the past 18 months, around $12.6 million of widening works have been undertaken on sections of the highway between Cloncurry and east of Torrens Creek.
About the project
The $8.8 million Jardine Valley project involves reconstructing and widening a 12 km section of the Flinders Highway between Hughenden and Prairie.
Work is being undertaken in two stages:
-
Stage one: Commenced in May 2008; upgrade of a 7 km section of the Flinders Highway.
-
Stage two: Commenced late August 2009; upgrade of a further 5 km section of the Flinders Highway.
These works demonstrate the department's commitment to connecting regional Queensland communities and meeting the needs of state-wide road freight growth.
Benefits
These include:
- improved safety for all road users on this key inland route
- improved access
- a wider, smoother highway for all road users.
