Driving in the city

Driving in city conditions is different from outback and country driving.

Apart from speed limits, road and traffic conditions can change quickly according to the time of day:

  • Traffic is often slower and heavier.
  • There are more roundabouts of different sizes.
  • There are more intersections and they are often signalised.
  • You need to be on the look out for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles leaving driveways, side streets and properties.

Queensland Transport's publication Your Keys to Driving in Queensland has some excellent advice on driving in city conditions.

City road conditions covered in the publication include:

  • traffic signs
  • regulatory signs
  • speed limit signs
  • warning signs
  • hazard markers
  • guide and information signs
  • roadworks
  • speed limits
  • traffic lights
  • roundabouts
  • driving in and changing lanes
  • railway level crossings
  • emergency vehicles
  • obeying lawful directions.
